Excellent piece. I did a year abroad too although mine was split between the less exotic France and Germany and stayed on for the summer in Germany to work in a stinky, sweaty catfood factory.

It changed my life and I knew I had to live abroad as soon as I could. I split my year between Turkey and Greece now, thirty years later.

You were brave in Jordan. Backpacking in Morocco as a single young man, made me understand what women go through in many parts of the world, beautiful that it was.

I do hope no lasting damage was done taking off the cast!

thank you james that’s much appreciated! ah sounds amazing, i did a joint honours too so spent the summer in barcelona which was a lot less chaotic, im sure you have some good stories from the catfood factory. its a little addictive, once you get used to it youre itching to go somewhere else! and yes was a very interesting place to be as a woman not sure many of my male classmates were proposed to… ligaments in my foot are all good now thanks!!

You never know! I received many propositions (if not exactly proposals 😆) in Morocco, and decided to leave a week ahead of schedule. I got rather tired of men being touchy feely. Not sure if Jordan is the same - Turkey is nothing like that thankfully.

Hii Kristina - came to this piece a little late but I love everything you have to say about Jordon! I did my year abroad in Canada and in no way it compares to the wild experience you had in Jordan haha but I got to travel to a bit of Central and South America and it started a whole new perspective for me as that's when I started solo travelling. So even though sometimes I would wish I have studied in a more adventurous places, I am happy that's where life took me.
